Hoosiers in St. Joe County were stunned when they received their NIPSCO bills this winter and saw that their energy prices skyrocketed. This is not because of corporate greed, but because our state government has been dropping the ball on this issue for decades.
If it seems like Dale DeVon and Mike Braun aren’t focused on making our lives more affordable, it’s because they’re not. In fact, five years ago the Indiana Chamber of Commerce warned that our average electricity rates are increasingly faster than the national average. Our Republican leadership has had plenty of time to replace aging infrastructure but they kept kicking the can down the road and we are now paying the price of their negligence.
Indiana’s state government told us that if you work hard, they will make it so you have enough money to raise a family on. They're not holding up their end of the deal and Hoosiers are literally paying the price. Here’s what I propose instead:
As state representative, I will introduce a bill drawing from our budget surplus to finally fix Indiana’s struggling power grid. After all, what is the point of having a surplus if you don’t use it to fix problems?
When school superintendents say they can't pay their utility bills, that's not a budget issue — it's a moral failure. As state representative, I will push for rate structures that don't force impossible choices between groceries and electric bills.
